This is a story of a girl who fell in love with her best friend’s boyfriend. It’s sort of a weird love shape or something, depends on the players you like to add, but I guess it’s a love triangle.
Helena has a boyfriend named Neil. Her best friend is Della, whose boyfriend is Kit. One time Helena had a dream about Kit, and that’s where everything turned weird. That, and Helena’s boyfriend got someone named Sadie pregnant, but they’ll be out of the picture soon enough. Except for the one time they all met at a restaurant, yeah, that was pretty awkward. Oh, and then entered Kit’s ex, Greer, who will also be Helena’s roommate. Yeah, everything about this book is fun.
“To fall in love with a boy is one thing, but to fall in love with your best friend’s boy because of a dream is… well, I’m fucked.”
Helena is “that girl who you can count on – steadfast, predictable”. This is why Della calls her a “beige bitch”; she’s reserved and is passive. She is always on the safe side, someone who knows what she wants, who won’t stray – until she dreamt of life with Kit. I love how her personality matured or improved in the book – from someone who is playing safe, to someone who craves for adventure. And she loves Harry Potter! She is definitely my spirit animal.
Kit on the other hand, is hard to read. If he is one of my friends, I’d be busting his balls every now and then. Helena would always ask him if he is in love and it took a “really long” while before he admitted that he is in love; not with his girlfriend, but with Helena. It’s like he is not man enough to control the situation – he is letting the situation control him instead.
One thing I’ve learned from reading this book is that if you’re scared, then it’s exactly the reason why you should do it. Helena had always been the one who is playing safe until she decided to leave and find herself – which she did. She learned how to be strong, independent and confident. #Fuckfear
I also learned something from Greer – “We think we can control our lives, but our lives control us. And everything that touches our lives controls us. People have less power than they think they do. It’s just the reaction we control.” Read what I said about Kit? I think he and Greer shared the same principle.
And of course, there is this line, also from Greer, “The best kind of love is the love that isn’t supposed to happen.”
This book is really good. You’ll learn to love Helena, be pissed at Kit, be thankful of Greer and June (another friend of Helena), and hate Della. The part when Helena is teasing Kit? Intense. Overall, I rate this 5 stars.
