The Siren

This story is not what I expected.

I though, like other You-are-not-human-you-should-not-expose-our-secret-to-humans novels, Kahlin would be living in the human world freely but not getting herself attached to people; some sort of a weird girl who kept to herself but may have few human interactions when needed. What I did not expect is a girl who acts like she’s mute just so she won’t cause any trouble with the humans (while it was not needed). I was like, So you get to live 100 lives, bringing deaths every now and then, but can’t order at McDonald’s because even the slightest sound may cause a big doom? Why choose this life anyway?

And then Akinli came into the picture. It must have been hard for Kahlin to not speak when she wanted to, to try to tell him exactly what she thinks, to really be open to Akinli. And Akinli is a great man for not minding her flaws, for sharing who he really is.

What I also love about this book is how the Ocean was made into a woman – a mother. That even though there are times that the Sirens must lure men (and women) to death, she is a mother that maintains the balance of the earth.

Kahlin’s relationship with the Ocean is like a teenage girl who is distant with her mom because all she sees are her mom’s flaws. But, like some girls, when she gets her heart confused or broken she would turn to her mom for comfort, and that’s when she realized that her mom is not that bad at all.

This book is not just about Kahlin falling in forbidden love for a human; it is also about a girl who loves her mother but struggles through what she wants and what her mother wants. Overall, it is a fresh concept; I love how the ocean was personified, the myth about sirens and how they lure men using their voice is there, and how a thousand years rule was broken because of love. This book is 5 out of 5 for me.
